Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is a vietnamese island in the gulf of thailand, near the cambodian border. It is famous for it’s beautiful beaches, pearl farms and fish sauce. We wanted to bring some fish sauce with us, but it is forbidden to take it on the airplane. It is not forbidden by law, but you won’t be able to get through security with the sauce in your luggage. Apparently the reason is it’s smell. Once a passenger brought it onto the plane, it broke and its really special (awful) smell was all over the plane. Since then, it is not allowed to bring it on board. So no sauce for you back home.

The flight from Ho Chi Minh City was a short one, around an hour, and nobody at airport security was interested in how much liquids we were carrying.

We took a Grab taxi from the airport to our hotel, the S’Bungalow Resort Phu Quoc. The Grab app is a really big, easy and cheap thing over here. If you wanna know more about it, click here.

The hotel has no private beach. The sea was supposed to be 300m from the hotel. What they don’t tell you is, that it is 300m as the crow flies. We had to walk for a bit to find a way down to the sea. Don’t listen to any well-meant advices regarding distances. We had to actually walk for 30min in the hot sun to get to the beach. Always double the distance.

Our first activity on the island was a snorcheling tour with „pacific boat„. They picked us up at our hotel at around 9 am. The ride to our boat took us about 30 minutes and we got a mini tour of the island. There are construction zones for new hotels and streets everywhere. Phu Quoc will be a tourist hotspot like mallorca in the next few years. Next to a big community of russians (cyrilic signs everywhere) there is also a big community of chinese on the island.

Back to our tour: our speedboat was located in Khu 2, An thoi, in the south of the island.

We visited two snorcheling spots, one of them was the „outer cloudy island“, the other one I don’t remember anymore (sorry 🤗). At the „inner cloudy island“ we got the chance to go for a swim and relax a little on a beautiful beach.

Lunch was served on fingernail island (yummy). Our tourguide grilled some seafood and pork on sticks in a traditional vietnamese kitchen 🙂

At our last stop we were fishing and could both show off our fabulous skills 🎣

Our second treat on the island: an hour-long hot stone massage at „Bin’s Eco Spa„. We didn’t book anything, just went in and asked for a massage, had to wait maybe five minutes. They had to pick up the masseuse from somewhere.

Totally loved it, those two women tortured us (in a good way of course) for an hour with their hands, feet and elbows and it felt sooooo good. We definitely recommend a visit, you feel awsome afterwards.

We read a lot about the food at the night market in Duong Dong, the capital of Phu Quoc, so we had to see it. Lena and I went there at around 5 pm, but we recommend to get there a bit later.

Our night started with fried noodles with seafood and vegetables, as a dessert we got icecream rolls, followed by a variety of seafood, a pomelo and cocktails.

really spicy sauce and chewy seafood
relaxing and crowd watching with pina colada and strawberry mojito

Just a fun fact: there was a thunderstorm every night since we arrived on the island ☔
